World War I Service Men and Women of Placer County, from the History of Placer and Nevada Counties, Caifornia
WORLD WAR I SERVICE MEN AND WOMEN OF PLACER COUNTY, CALIFORNIA
From the History of Placer and Nevada Counties, California, by Lardner & Brock
This index is compiled and placed on-line by the Placer County Genealogical Society through the volunteer efforts of Barbara Leak, Jerry Unruh and Ron Young.
The following names of men and women from Placer County who gave military service in World War I is taken from the History of Placer and Nevada Counties, California, by W.B. Lardner and M.J. Brock (Los Angeles: Historic Record Co., 1924). Lardner and Brock extracted the names from listings originally published in the Placer Herald newspaper of March 8, 1919.
The names were published in six categories:
1. Names of the Enlisted
2. Names of the Inducted
3. Student Army Training Camp
4. Somewhere in France
5. Casualty List
6. Honor Roll
The category "Somewhere in France" names those who saw service on foreign fields. Most served in Europe, but a few were with the forces in Siberia and are so noted.
For ease of searching, the Placer County Genealogical Society has consolidated the names from all six categories into a single, alphabetical listing. There is some duplication of names. However, approximately 665 Placer County service men and women are identified.

Old Auburn Cemetery Books, from the Auburn Public Cemetery District
INDEXES TO OLD AUBURN CEMETERY BOOKS
From the Auburn Public Cemetery District, 1040 Collins Drive (Office), P.O. Box 4357 (mailing), Auburn, California 95604
A Placer County Genealogical Society indexing project.
The Old Auburn Cemetery is located at 170 Fulweiler Avenue, Auburn, California.
A collection of cemetery records from Auburn Cemetery District was transferred to the Placer County Archives (Archives) in 2004. Before transfer, the Placer County Genealogical Society (PCGS) made two copies of all the documents and placed them in binders. One set of binders was given to Auburn Cemetery District and the other remains in the collection of PCGS. The originals are housed at the Placer County Archives.
Several of the original ledgers were very fragile and were in scattered fragments. Often one page would have four or more fragments with handwriting on both sides. When the PCGS volunteers copied the originals they carefully copied them in the order they found them, fragments and all. Archives volunteer Donna Dimmick painstakingly replaced hundreds of fragments with their matching fragments in sleeves to reconstruct the original page. Therefore the binders at the Auburn Cemetery and PCGS are somewhat different from the originals.
The collection of originals at the Archives was given accession numbers 2004. 15.1 through 2004.15.10. PCGS and Auburn Cemetery binders have numbered their binders 1-10.
Books 3, 8 and 9 were entered into a database by genealogical society volunteers Jacqui Marcella, Alora Lipsmeyer and Carmel Barry-Schweyer.
The Oddfellows Book is housed in the Auburn Oddfellows Lodge. The book was photographed and transcribed by Archives volunteer April MacDonald.
May Perry's Cemetery Albums are housed at the Placer County Archives and were indexed and transcribed by Archives volunteers Sherry Shackner and Coralee Arnold.
Placer County Deed Book 97 is housed in the Placer County Archives and was indexed and transcribed by Archives volunteer Carmel Barry-Schweyer.
